Artists and Writers Summer Reading: The Great Gatsby as a Work of Art at New Britain Museum of American Art

In honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of The Great Gatsby, this special two-session summer reading program invites literature and art lovers to explore why F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is regarded as one of the most beautifully written works of the 20th century. Led by Docent Carol Lacoss, participants will connect the novel’s themes and imagery with the Luminist and Impressionist paintings in the NBMAA’s permanent collection.

During the first session, attendees will examine select artworks, identify parallels between the visual arts and Fitzgerald’s stylistic techniques, and read and discuss Chapter 1 of the novel, focusing on themes of hope and beauty. Participants will then read the remaining chapters with guiding questions on style and meaning.

The second session features an in-depth discussion of chapters 2 through 9, exploring how The Great Gatsby continues to inspire readers and artists alike with its enduring vision of the American dream. The group will revisit the paintings to deepen the connection between written and visual imagery.

Program dates are Wednesday, July 16; August 6; and August 13, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

This program has sold out; no walk-ins will be accepted. For more information, visit nbmaa.org or call 860-229-0257. The New Britain Museum of American Art is located at 56 Lexington Street, New Britain, CT.
