While waiting at Philadelphia, PA airport on a layover recently we happened upon a wine bar and cafe called Vino Volo. We had never seen nor heard of this before and since we had an hour to kill, we pulled up a chair at the bar. The bartender – or should I call her wine Sommelier – asked us if we wanted a glass of wine or if we want to do a wine tasting. A wine tasting in an airport? Okay, we like wine so we’re game.
She showed us the wine tasting menu and once we chose our selection she placed a wooden tray in front of us and began to put a piece of paper down on it. The paper had the name of the wine we were going to taste with a bit of information about each wine.
She then placed a wine glass on top of the paper and poured the wine, talking about each wine as she did this. We learned a lot about the wines from her and also from the paper underneath each glass. Vino Volo gives you information about the notes and what you can expect to taste in the wine.
We were also informed that wine was available for purchase through their retails stores, online in their wine shop, and that they also offer a wine club where you can get selected wines sent to your home on a monthly basis.
Since they have a menu, we also ordered some food. I had creamy tomato bisque that came with warm bread. They must make their food up ahead of time because there was little to no waiting. But, that doesn’t mean this is fast food. The soup was definitely made from scratch and so was the bread. It was also presented nicely. This definitely beats on-the-run airport food.
The next time you find that you have time to kill in between flights and you happen upon a larger airport, check to see if a Vino Volo is available. We think you will be pleased with your experience.
