Join the Shoreline Roller Derby for a “Grease”-themed double-header bout on July 26, 2014 at Galaxy Roller Rink, 210 Bridge Street, Groton, CT. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. First whistle at 6:00 p.m. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut’s food center
After two doubleheader events of rocking, rollicking derby fun, Shoreline Roller Derby is asking its fans to help them fight hunger in the community. Their next roller derby doubleheader, Summer Shovin’ will also be a food drive to benefit the Gemma E. Moran Food Center. All of the food donated will be picked up by the United Way Food Center and distributed through their various programs in New London County. The Food Center provides food to soup kitchens, child care centers, and programs for the elderly with an emphasis on nutrition and fresh produce.
Shoreline Roller Derby has been making an effort to get out into the community lately. Besides events like the Spring Food Stroll and area parades, they’ve been volunteering at Fairview Retirement Home, the New London Community Meal Center and the Gemma E. Moran Food Center. On their initial visit to the Food Center, skaters prepped 550 pounds of potatoes that went out on the Mobile Food Pantry the next day and they’ll be back in July to prep and sort more food.
As far as the action goes, Shoreline will be meeting one team for the first time and have a rematch against another. The Salty Broads will play Western Massachusetts Roller Derby and the BellaDonnas will bout against the Upper Valley Vixens. The doors open at 5 on July 26th, the first game is at 6 and the second one starts at 8:30. It all happens at Galaxy Roller Rink in Groton. Tickets are $10 ahead of time, $12 at the door or $10 for Military with an ID. Everyone who brings a food donation will be entered into a special raffle for a free ticket to the next bout and perhaps some other extras. If you would like to donate to the food drive or to the raffle for the food drive, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Bring a chair and be ready to cheer because Summer Shovin’ is going to be a blast!
