The Real McCoy Rum showcased itself recently at Max Fish in Glastonbury. Where the bar was transformed into a Prohibition-era bar, ready for the cocktail competition. In partnership with the Connecticut chapter of the U.S. Bartenders Guild (USBG) 10 mixologists went head-to-head to create the best vintage-style cocktail.
Using only The Real McCoy Rum and ingredients available during prohibition, 10 of Connecticut’s top mixologists were allotted seven minutes to serve up four of their original Real McCoy prohibition cocktail. One for each of the three judges and one for spectators to sample. The judging panel was comprised of Bailey Pryor, President and CEO of Real McCoy Spirits, Corp., Stacy Murray of The Beverage Journal and Brian Mitchell, Director of Wine & Beverages of Max Restaurant Group.

The idea to bring back the Real McCoy Rum developed as Bailey Pryor was producing a documentary about Captain Bill McCoy, America’s first “Rum Runner.” In January 1920, when Prohibition began, Captain Bill McCoy, being the ambitious and innovative person he was, decided to full his ship with alcohol in the Caribbean and sail it up to New York. Because he anchored three miles off shore in what then was consisted international waters, he legally acted as a flooding liquor store to the speakeasies of Manhattan.
Others soon copied McCoy, but their alcohol was watered down or sullied by adding chemicals like turpentine and wood alcohol in what became dubbed “booze” or “Hooch.” McCoy provided only topped quality, unadulterated spirit, inspiring his product to be known as “The Real McCoy.”
Thus inspired by the history of the rum, Bailey contacted the original distillery, Foursquare Distillery, now ran by the fourth generation, in Barbados that distilled the rum for Bill McCoy and had them commence distilling the Real McCoy Rum using the original recipe.
Today’s Real McCoy Rum is handcrafted in the Prohibition Tradition, with the same unadulterated authenticity as the famous rum known during the Roaring 20″s; barrel aged, no additives, chemicals or colorants.
The Real McCoy rum is imported exclusively by the Real McCoy Spirits Corporation out of Stonington, CT. It is available in three ages: 12 year, 5 year, and 3 year. Currwently it is only sold in Connecticut, Florida Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
