The Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival takes place every year in August. As far as we know, this is the only hot air balloon festival in Connecticut. We attended the festival and got some great photographs of the hot air balloons that participated in the afternoon on Saturday. The Plainville Hot Air Balloon festival is the annual fundraiser for the Plainville Fire Company and attracts thousands of people every year.
The 2015 Plainville Hot Air Balloon Festival is held at Norton Park on August 28 through August 30, 2015
It is free to get in and they offer free parking in the field at Norton Park. There are also free shuttle buses at the GE Lot on Woodford Avenue. When you come into town just look for signs to direct you to both locations.
The festival starts off on Friday night with the Fire Glow event. Balloonist bring their balloons and fire them up so visitors can bask in the glow and take photographs.
On Saturday and Sunday, hot air balloon owners bring their balloons out and get them ready for launch at 6 am and then again at 6 pm.Balloons will only launch at 6 am on Sunday. Once they take off they are gone from the park area and land miles away. They do not land at the park so be aware that once they take off at 6 am there will not be another batch of balloons to set until 6 pm.
There is plenty to do during the day. Lots of vendors are available for shopping, there is food served up by the Fire Department, an antique and shorts car event lines either side of the road through the park, and kids can play at the large playground. The Fire Company brings a fire truck for kids to jump in and there are bands and other types of entertainment throughout the day. We saw folks bring lawn chairs, blankets and even dinner to eat while they wait for the balloons to arrive and setup. There is a row of porta potties available, bleachers and benches to sit on and permanent bathrooms as well.
