What do sea lions, wine and paintbrushes have in common? Nothing, unless you love sea life and vino and all things awesome! We had the privilege of participating in the team-up of The Drunken Palette and Ocean Blue Catering at a special event at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut this week. The Drunken Palette is a fun, interactive DIY painting studio with two locations in Westbrook and New London where one can relax and learn to paint beautiful canvases of all kinds of subject matter, in our case, sea lions. Ocean Blue Catering hosted this event for us at the aquarium where we viewed a live sea lion show.
We learned all about the beautiful California sea lion, how it moves (beautifully!), what it eats (fish!), conservation efforts, and how they are cared for and trained while in captivity. Special to this presentation was a sea lion who actually painted a beautiful piece of original art on her own which was raffled off at the end of the event.
Ocean Blue Catering (the aquarium’s own event and catering service) provided light refreshments as well as beer and wine while our instructor from the Drunken Palette taught us how to create, step by step, a portrait of one of the beautiful sea lions.
Wine and paint studios are all the rage these days, and you can see why when you attend a paint event like this one. Lots of laughs, some silly adult humor, and a little alcohol made a fun combination for this over 21 crowd while we learned the basics of the art of painting. Be prepared for a few “inappropriate” anecdotes while you work…it’s all part of the fun!
The Drunken Palette offers BYOB classes like these in their own studio, as well as private at-home parties or events. No skills are required as part of their regularly scheduled group classes. Their mobile events make it even easier to relax and paint. They can be as small or as large as you like, and all painting supplies are included. Alcoholic beverages are entirely optional, but add to the carefree, relaxing atmosphere. (And P.S…they DO offer events that are all-ages friendly too, like the Cookies and Canvas event at Mystic Aquarium on February 26th, best for kindergarten to 5th graders. No inappropriate humor or alcohol at this one!)
Painting parties are big on fun and small on the wallet (approx. $35 per person for a basic seat in a group class). Check out the Drunken Palette at thedrunkenpalette.com, you won’t be disappointed.
And if painting isn’t your thing, but sea life IS, check out the upcoming events at Mystic Aquarium. Coming up this spring are a Bridal Expo, Painting with Penguins, and an Aquarium After Dark event, just to name a few. Check out the full calendar here
