My girlfriend and I were arguing over whether Yellow Topaz or Citrine is the birthstone for November. Which one of us is right?
-Carol W. Stamford, CT
I would have to say that you are both right on this one. The confusion may stem from the fact that before the development of modern gemology, all yellow gems were called “topaz”. Yellow Topaz and Citrine are separate and unrelated minerals, yet are often confused with each other. Citrine is a variety of quartz, known as “healing quartz”, considered an alternative to Yellow Topaz as the birthstone for November. Citrine combines a warm attractive golden yellow color at a moderate price. Citrine can beautifully brighten almost any jewelry style, harmonious with the gleam of high polished yellow gold which is back in vogue. This golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health while encouraging hope, energy and warmth from within the wearer. Yellow Topaz when brilliantly cut, can often be mistaken for a diamond. Because of its rarity, it is also expensive. This sturdy gem possesses a lively fire, exceptional clarity, and beautiful color. Traditionally Topaz has been thought to strengthen the mind, and increase wisdom.
