On November 3rd we attended the Harvest Table Luncheon, an annual fundraiser to help support the New Covenant House of Hospitality. The luncheon was held at The Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave., in Stamford.
The New Covenant House of Hospitality serves the greater Stamford area, which includes Stamford, New Canaan, Greenwich and Darien. They serve meals twice a day, everyday of the year without fail and gave out over 800,000 meals in 2012.
Did you know that 39.8% of population lives in poverty? For those of use who do not have to worry about where our next meal will come from, this is a hard number to grasp. The worst part is, it can happen to anyone. Today you might be secure, the next day, you may lose your job and be struggling like so many Americans. These services are vital to the people who need them and for those who don’t, your donations and time are greatly needed.
Before the luncheon, food demonstrations and samplings were provided by local chefs and businesses. A silent auction of donated gifts for the holidays helped to support the mission of the New Covenant House.
Some of the vendors we sampled included cupcakes from With Love from the Cupboard from Westport, Organic Artisanal blended teas from Sabita Westport, and homemade breads from Wave Hill Breads out of Norwalk.
The luncheon was attended by over 200 women who were all there to support the New Covenant House and their feeding programs – soup kitchen, after school program, breakfast-to-go, on-site medical. The New Covenant House also maintains a food pantry, and works closely with local care providers, meal delivery and churches to get food to those who need it most. Guests also brought boxed and canned food to donate to the food pantry.
After the luncheon, we were treated to a lively panel discussion hosted by Linda Kavanagh of The New England Culinary Group with local entrepreneurs, Jackie Ekholm of Moo Chocolate and Marina Marchese of Red Bee Honey who shared their passions and how they got started in their businesses.
All of the programs through the New Covenant House are donor funded so you help is needed so please donate what you can. For volunteer opportunities please call Program Coordinator at (203) 964-8228 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
