Getaway to Saybrook Point Inn’s New Tall Tales Guest House

The Inn offers a variety of  81 rooms in the main building, ranging from a “Standard” room to a “Full One Bedroom Suite”. For those cooler evenings sit by the cozy fireplace, but during those warmer days, sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy the spectacular water views. Several rooms offer Jacuzzi-style bathtub where you can ease away your efforts at the in-house fitness center. Want a more nautical, New England stay, try the recently renovated “Lighthouse Suite”. The Lighthouse Suite is located on the main dock of the marina, overlooking the natural beauty of Long Island Sound and Connecticut River. Across the road and down a piece from the main inn is the Three Stories Guest House, offering eight distinctly decorated rooms and that make you feel like you are right at home.

The newest addition to the Inn is “Tall Tales”, which we had the opportunity to enjoy an overnight stay. Located a very short walk down the street from the Main Inn. This totally renovated six bedroom, Italianate home provides the perfect setting for your Connecticut get away, combining the amenities of a hotel with the comfort of a home.

Between the rooms on the first floor, is a dining room with a small kitchen. Just the place to prepare and serve home-cooked meals for your group. As you past through the dining area and you are hungry, grab a piece of fruit or some freshly baked pastries and some fresh brewed coffee. Adjacent to the dining area, is the living room, where one can sit and relax with friends or read a book by the gas fireplace. The second floor offers a game area with billiards and a custom chess table. During those warmer days, adventure into the backyard for a round of bocce.

Every Tall Tales bedroom has its own personality, filled with one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture and color scheme. The rooms are named after prominent figures from Saybrook’s past. Reserve your room by your favorite color or name. Several of the cozy and picturesque rooms offer “bubble” tubs where you can relax after a long day of touring the local area or a tiring day of sitting on the docks and sipping cocktails. Ours had a sitting room where one can enjoy a good book. Enjoy that morning coffee or evening glass of wine on the deck of the rooms while taking in the sun raise or sunset. If you stayed on a Saturday night or happen to be in Old Saybrook on a Sunday morning looking for a fabulous Sunday brunch, try Connecticut Magazine’s #1 Brunch at Saybrook Point Inn. The Brunch Buffet encompasses two rooms full of culinary delights.

Several stations offer a variety of scrumptious farm fresh salads using locally sourced produce; seafood including shrimp cocktail, salmon, and smoked seafood. The focal point of one room is the carving station with a selection of meats and vegetables. On the Sunday we were there, it offered prime rib, country ham, corn beef and cabbage, and several different vegetables.

In the mood for an omelet, get yours made to order with a variety of ingredients. While your omelet is cooking, grab some bacon and / or sausage to accompany it. After eating your omelet and you are still in the “breakfast” mode, try a mini Belgium waffle with an array of toppings.

Too many choices already, but one part to go before dessert: Pasta. At the pasta station you get to choice all the fixings, color of sauce, and type of pasta from what is being offered that day. Get as complex as you or keep it simple.

Last, but not least, satisfy your sweet cravings from a wide selection of delectable desserts.

We were fortune to be staying the night they were having one of the Saybrook Point Cuisine Series and had the opportunity to partake. This series of culinary adventures present pairs of food and drink presented in conjunction with Seaside Wines and Spirits on Main Street in Old Saybrook. Ours was titled “Homage to Fromage, Everything French”. The evening started off with 15 different French cheeses from Fromage Fine Foods & Coffees in Old Saybrook and champagne. From there we went to three courses of French cuisine and dessert with each being accompanied by French wine or champagne. The culinary staff prepared superb dishes to be accompanied by excellent wine. During the evening as we enjoyed the fine food, we were educated about wine and the history of what we were drinking.

If you are thinking about booking a weekend at the Inn, may I suggest April 9th or 16th, that way you can also attend either The Macallan Scotch Whiskey Dinner or Argentinian Wine Dinner. I sure you will have a great time at either.

The Inn has a very nice heated inside pool and hot tubs as well as a separate heated outside pool. There are locker facilities and a full-size gym with professional equipment for guests to use. During your stay what not visit the Sanno Spa and enjoy one of the numerous services they offer.

Least, I fail to mention, Saybrook Point Inn offers several different packages that will make your stay even more memorable. They even have one for your pet, “Doggie on the Go Package”  where your “Very Important Pet” is treated to an assortment of goodies and a doggie bed, while you enjoy a bottle of wine upon arrival and breakfast the following morning.

Be sure to book your get away at the histrionic Saybrook Point Inn as it has all you need for that getaway; stunning views, personable hospitality, and numerous amenities. Did you know that Yale College (now known at Yale University in New Haven, CT) actually started right down at the point in Old Saybrook. Just down the road a bit from the Inn, there is a small monument that marks the spot.
