The new year means a fresh start and a long list of goals that you wish to accomplish. 2014 seems to be no different. If you’re like thousands of other Connecticut residents, one of the items on your list of to-dos is to get organized. The problem is ensuring that this year you’ll stick with it. Below are a list of tips to help you start to get and stay organized throughout 2014 and all the new years to come.
Goals: First, determine realistic goals. What rooms in the house need an organization makeover? Which ones do you want to start with? Make sure to list a combination of large and small goals, not all accomplishments have to be large. Then, give yourself deadlines to accomplish each goal. Without deadlines you’ll be more inclined to put the to-do list off until later.
Enlist Help: Don’t take everything on by yourself. Ask for help when you need it from family and friends. Tell them about your goals that you have and ask them to celebrate with you when complete one and cross it off of your list.
Reward Yourself: Be sure to give yourself incentives for completing each item. Rewards don’t have to be the same size. For items on the list that take longer to complete, reward yourself with a large gift, and smaller items merit a smaller surprise. Some examples might be a piece of your favorite dessert, an item that you’ve been wanting to buy for some time, or a night out without the kids.
Stay on Track: It can be discouraging when it’s a few months into the year and you haven’t marked anything off of the list yet. Don’t lose hope. Even though you haven’t started yet, you can make up for lost time. Consider working on your smaller projects first to get motivated about tackling the larger items.
Remember, getting organized isn’t just for those who were born that way. With a little will power, a list of goals, and some positive reinforcement you can be on your way to a well organized life. (That will stay that way)
